Isang Smith

Prior to becoming an acupuncturist, Isang Smith provided expert services as a massage therapist and a running coach. Isang utilizes her experience as a competitive runner and martial artist to successfully create treatment plans for her patients. In conjunction with customized acupuncture techniques, Isang utilizes manual and craniosacral therapy techniques to restore patient’s wellness so they may return to sporting activities, duties at work, and overall well-being.

Isang earned her BA in Psychology from Columbia University, New York in 2009. While at Columbia, Isang was the captain of the sprint squad for Columbia’s Track and Field team. Throughout her Track and Field career, she competed at regional, state and national level competitions. After graduation, Isang competed in road races, duathlons, and mountain biking. She also became the Philippines National Champion in 2015 for the 1500m event in Track and Field. As a running coach, Isang taught beginner and advanced classes for New York Road Runners, JackRabbit, and other running clubs to children and adults; preparing them for road races and proper running form. She currently is training in martial arts such as Muay Thai and Jiujitsu at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York.

Isang graduated in 2012 from the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences with an Associate degree in Occupational Studies. She soon after obtained her license as a massage therapist in New York State. In 2013, Isang started her own private practice where she worked with patients at various locations around NYC. In addition to running a private practice, Isang collaborated with companies such as REI, lululemon and NYRR, offering workshops focusing on injury prevention and self-care techniques.

Isang received her Master of Science degree from Tri-State College of Acupuncture in Manhattan in 2017. Isang is certified through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Board Certified by New York State, and a member of the Acupuncture Society of New York (ASNY). She integrates acupuncture, medical massage, trigger point therapy, deep tissue, Tui Na and cupping therapy in her private practice.

As a competitive athlete, Isang has a unique insight into the needs of athletes and active people. Her passion for treating orthopedic injuries is matched by her passion for focused training in running and martial arts. Whether someone is a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, Acupuncture and Massage Therapy techniques provide a safe and effective way to optimize an athlete’s performance.

As the health/wellness industry evolves, so should the clinicians/practitioners in that industry. Through continuing education, internships, and personal/clinical experience, Isang immerses herself in current scientific evidence and novel methodology in order to use the best available techniques for her patients.

Prior to becoming a physical therapist, Lee Scantalides provided expert services as a strength coach/personal trainer and as a martial arts instructor. Lee utilizes his experience as a martial artist and his education as a movement specialist to successfully create and implement rehabilitation programs for his patients. In conjunction with individualized strength training, Lee utilizes manual therapeutic techniques and neuromuscular re-education to restore patient’s wellness so they may return to sporting activities, duties at work, and overall well-being.

Lee earned his BA in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology from the University of Colorado (CU) at Boulder in 2003. While at CU, Lee was the captain of his Taekwondo team competing nationally, state-wide, and at regional tournaments. After moving to NYC, Lee turned his focus to personal training and continuing his career teaching Taekwondo. As an instructor, Lee taught beginner and advanced classes at Eastside Taekwondo to children and adults; preparing them for regional competition and belt exams. Lee began personal training at Equinox Fitness Clubs where he completed all levels of their rigorous and exclusive education program from the Equinox Fitness Training Institute (EFTI), achieving Tier 3 Elite Plus status.

In 2005, Lee started his own training and coaching business where he trains clients privately at various locations around NYC. In addition to training/coaching private clients, Lee taught educational programs on musculoskeletal pathologies and safe stretching protocols to novice and experienced trainers at Equinox Fitness Clubs and New York Sports Club. Lee received a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Touro College in Manhattan in 2010, where he was the recipient of the Research Achievement Award for exemplary performance in research statistics.

Lee is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and as a personal trainer (CPT). In 2008, Lee earned his 4th Dan (degree) black belt in Taekwondo ranking him as a Master. In addition to Taekwondo, he has trained in Uechi-Ryu Karate and Small Circle Japanese Ju-Jitsu from the age of 6.

As a true martial artist, Lee believes achieving proficiency/mastery in movement/knowledge does not mean the cessation of training/learning, but instead the beginning of it. As such, he continues to train and compete in martial arts, novel for him, such as Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the Renzo Gracie academy in Manhattan. In 2013, he passed his Strongfirst Kettlebell instructor (SFG-I) certification in Manhattan. Due to his performance at his SFG-I certification, he was invited to assist at an instructor certification in California in 2017.

Lee utilizes kettlebell, barbell, and bodyweight exercises for rehabilitation/strengthening programming with his clients and patients. In 2016, he became part of the Clinical Athlete community, where like-mind clinicians lead by example with their clients/patients. As the health/wellness industry evolves, so should the clinicians/practitioners in that industry.

Through continuing education, peer-reviewed journals, and personal/clinical experience, Lee immerses himself in current scientific evidence and novel methodology in order to use the best available evidence for his patients and clients.
